Author event with Riley Keough
Parnassus Books and Belmont University are thrilled to present an evening with Riley Keough, who will discuss the memoir she wrote with her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, From Here to the Great Unknown.
Sometimes the most famous among us are the least known.
Join actor and producer Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six) for a one-of-a-kind conversation as she pays tribute to her mother Lisa Marie Presley’s incredible memory. Joined by a special guest, Keough will dive into a legendary tale of American royalty, family ties, the highs and lows of fame, love, grief, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and daughter.
Elvis Presley’s only child spent years recording countless hours of riveting, raw, and breathtakingly vulnerable tape for her memoir. After Lisa Marie's passing in 2023, her daughter Riley dedicated her time to fulfilling her mother’s wish to share her words and complete her unfinished work. In FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN, Lisa Marie and Riley’s voices join together to tell one breathtaking story.
This ticketed event will take place at Belmont University's Massey Performing Arts Center, 1922 Belmont Blvd, Nashville, TN 37212, and will start at 6:00 p.m.
Doors will open at 5:00 p.m.
Tickets:
Each ticket will cost $35.00 and includes a general admission seat and signed copy of From Here to the Great Unknown.
Parking:
Limited free parking is available on Acklen Avenue between the Lila Bunch Library / Gallery of Iconic Guitars & Massey Performing Arts Center. Additional free parking is available in the Curb Events Center Garage at 1520 Bernard Avenue (a 5-7 minute walk to the event)
About the book:
Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough.
In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir.
A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and now grieved.
Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, lay in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran toward his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they had in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother's wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world.
To make her mother known.
This extraordinary book is written in both Lisa Marie's and Riley's voices, a mother and daughter communicating--from this world to the one beyond--as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other--the last words of the only child of an American icon.
About the authors:
Lisa Marie Presley was a singer and songwriter who was born in Memphis and raised at Graceland as the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. She released three studio albums throughout her music career-- To Whom It May Concern, Now What, and Storm & Grace, the first of which was certified gold. Lisa Marie passed away in January 2023.
Riley Keough is an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Independent Spirit Award-nominated actress. She is known for her work in Daisy Jones & the Six, Zola, and more. She also co-directed War Pony (2022), which won the Caméra d'Or for best first feature at Cannes, and cofounded the production company Felix Culpa with Gina Gammell. She is the eldest daughter of Lisa Marie Presley and sole trustee of Graceland.

"The Kingdom of the Poor: My Journey Home" by Charles Strobel
As Charles Strobel, beloved Nashville priest and advocate for the unhoused, reached the end of his life in 2023, he began to contemplate the last message he wanted to leave for his family, friends, and community. With the help of his niece, Katie Seigenthaler, and his colleague, Amy Frogge, Charlie began to dictate The Kingdom of the Poor. He wrote, "Mark Twain, the great American folk hero and writer, has said, 'The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.' The following pages help to explain why I was born." The "why" of Charlie Strobel's life, which was devoted to helping the homeless and disenfranchised people of Nashville, was a simple motivating belief that we are all poor and we are all worthy of love. The Kingdom of the Poor is the story of how he came to this understanding, and lived his life accordingly once he had.
Charles Strobel (1943–2023) was the founding director of Room In The Inn, a continuum of care for unhoused people living on the streets of Nashville and beyond. A Catholic priest, Strobel was known for his innovative advocacy on behalf of human rights and economic equity, his ecumenism, and his opposition to the death penalty. He is the author of Room In The Inn: Ways Your Congregation Can Help Homeless People. He played in amateur baseball leagues into his seventies and was a passionate New York Yankees fan.
Katie Seigenthaler, the niece of Charles Strobel, is the coauthor with Dr. Alex Jahangir of Hot Spot: A Doctor’s Diary from the Pandemic, published in 2022 by Vanderbilt University Press. She is a managing partner with FINN Partners and a former journalist with the Chicago Tribune.
For more than 30 years in Nashville, Kay West wrote for local, regional and national newspapers and magazines, was Nashville correspondent for People magazine, and was one of the three first writers for the Nashville Scene beginning in 1989. She was their weekly restaurant critic from 1992-2007, a column she resumed in 2022 on a guest basis, receiving the Food Writing award in 2024 from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia. She has written five books including Around the Opry Table A Feast of Recipes and Stories from the Grand Ole Opry. In Nashville she served on multiple non-profit boards and was an active volunteer for Thistle Farms and Room in the Inn. She and RITI founder Charlie Strobel shared a love of stories and baseball.
Rachel Hester is the Executive Director of Room In The Inn, the only comprehensive site of services for those experiencing homelessness in Nashville. Throughout her 35 years of service, Rachel has brought an unparalleled passion and respect for the community she serves. Under her leadership, Room In The Inn has undergone dramatic transformation, expanding its facilities and services to offer solutions to the emergency, transitional, and permanent needs of those who call the streets of Nashville home. Rachel serves on several community boards and has been named Bank of America CEO of the Year at the Center for Nonprofit Management's Salute to Excellence Awards. She is a powerful advocate, visionary leader, and talented at bringing people together to address the most pressing challenges facing her community today.
Amy Frogge is a long-term volunteer for Room In The Inn. She is an attorney, grant writer, former member of the Metro Nashville school board, and current member of the Nashville Symphony Choir.
This event is part of our TN Writers | TN Stories series. Readings and discussions take place in the Digital Learning Center at the Tennessee State Museum. Most events include an opportunity to purchase books through the Museum store and get them signed by the author. If you show your Eventbrite ticket you will receive a 10% discount on your book purchase in the Museum Store.

MILEStones: Tribute to Miles Davis
MILEStones is a Nashville based musical acknowledgement to jazz legend Miles Davis dedicated to paying homage to the late great trumpeter’s music. With a focus on the two “great quintets” he led in the 1950’s and 60’s, MILEStones sets out to bring back to life the mood and aura that made his music so distinct, utilizing the exact arrangements and instrumentation that he recorded on so many of his classic albums. Led by drummer Brian Czach, MILEStones will take you on a nostalgic journey back to the music that changed the landscape of jazz music forever.
